Sean “Puffy” Combs signed Carl Thomas to Bad Boy Entertainment in 1997 after discovering him in at an open-mic in a New York club. In 1999 Thomas release the single “I Wish”. Topping the R&B charts for six consecutive weeks, creating strong interest for his debut album April 18, 2000, Emotional. On the strength of this single, and the album's other singles, "Summer Rain" at #18 and the title track "Emotional" at #8 on the R&B charts: The album was certified platinum, with over 1 million in sales. His second album Let’s Talk Abut It, was released March 23, 2004. On December 7, 2006, Thomas earned a Grammy Award nomination along with Chaka Khan, Yolanda Adams and the late Gerald Levert for "Everyday (Family Reunion)" a song from the soundtrack of Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Family Reunion. His third album, So Much Better, was released May 30, 2007 and reached number 25 on the US Billboard. He is now signed to Verve Music Group. Thomas released a new album entitled Conquer on December 6, 2011. The first single was "Don't Kiss Me", which featured Snoop Dogg and was written and produced by Rico Love.

Black Sheep was formed in 1989 by Andres "Dres" Titus and William "Mista Lawnge" McLean, who are both from Queens, New York but met as teenagers in North Carolina where both of their families relocated. The group was an affiliate of the Native Tongues, which included the Jungle Brothers, A Tribe Called Quest, and De La Soul. Black Sheep debuted in 1991 with the hit song "Flavor of the Month" and later released its first album, A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing charted three times on the Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart in 1992 with "The Choice Is Yours” (#9), and "Strobelite Honey" (#1). Black Sheep was also featured on the remix of Vanessa Williams’s single "Work to Do" (#8). Black Sheep was the first hip-hop act to appear on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.
